See if this scene sounds familiar:  

A teacher or mentor tells you to “hooooooold” a few key notes in your 2/4 march passage, and so you practice holding those notes for a while.

Now, you go back to your lesson (or to your band practice), and your instructor is still telling you - No, you gotta “hooooooold” those notes!  

So, now you head back to the practice room determined. You practice for hours and hours to get this holding and expression down pat.

Now, back to another lesson. This time? “What are you doing? Are you crazy? This is WAAAAAYYYYY OVER EXPRESSED!!!”  

Ack! Frustration!!!!

Sadly, this cycle tends to repeat itself, and repeat itself, and repeat itself… over and over again… during the life-spans of most aspiring pipers. And the sad thing is - it doesn’t tend to have a happy ending. I would say that the majority of learning pipers end up quitting, and in no small part due to the “expression dillema”.  

Now, let’s pause for a minute. The good news is, even the best players in the world, who, by this time in their careers, express the music beautifully, at one time struggled to get the emotion out of the music, just like you currently struggle. So you’re not alone here.  

Clearly, when you listen to the likes of the Inveraray and District pipe band, or the SFU pipe band… Or when you listen to Stuart Liddell or Roddy MacLeod or Jack Lee - there is indeed a way to successfully express bagpipe music. They’re doing it! And, it sounds extremely amazing.  

So, how DO the greats express? Is it just pure raw talent, coordination, and divine providence? (Hint: No!)  

No, it’s not. Instead, they have developed a set of TWO primary expression tools that come together to produce the base of their expression.
