Are you frustrated with synthetic drone reeds that get wet, causing them to be impossible to tune? (Oh, and they don’t even sound that great to begin with…)  

I’ve been teaching and performing bagpipes now for about 20 years all over the world. I’ve taught countless individual players, been a full-time instructor of junior bands, pipe-majored a grade 1 band that qualified for the world-championship final, taught workshops for dozens of intermediate bands - And, you know, one of the biggest obstacle to pipers is undoubtedly - you guessed it - drone reeds that get wet.  

Ever since the advent of the synthetic drone reed, the world of piping totally changed. In certain ways, it changed for the better -- beginners and intermediates could achieve a decent pipe sound far faster, far earlier in the learning process. Synthetic reeds are just easy. They just work.  

The longer you play, though, the more TWO TRUTHS start to sink in:  

Truth Number 1: As soon as my reeds get wet, tuning becomes impossible. Everything becomes unstable. It’s game over.  

Truth Number 2: Synthetic reeds just don’t sound as good as the old cane reeds, period. They just don’t.  

Ironically, the reaction to truth number one was the introduction (and eventual dominance) of the almighty moisture control system (You know: canisters, desiccant, tubes, Oh my!). When I was young, it was accepted that anyone who still played an “old fashioned animal bag” was crazy. However, the longer we spent on these synthetic moisture-free setups, the sooner it became abundantly clear: These systems make our pipes sound worse. Less rich. Way less harmonic.  

So now, to adapt to the new Truth #1 (moisture is evil), we’ve exacerbated Truth #2 (synthetic reeds don’t sound as good). Isn’t that weird?  

Go back to Truth #1 and re-read back to this point. It’s amazingly simple, isn’t it? Our fear of moisture has ruined the quality of sound we can achieve from our instruments.  

Let’s pause for a minute though - and think of the pipe bands at the top of the world right now. ALL of the top grade one bands are on sheepskin bags. And, the best of the best? They’re using cane drone reeds.  

Why? Because this setup sounds better, AND it’s more stable. And, don’t take my word for it - just LISTEN to these bands - the sound is amazing, and it never changes.  

And, to top it all off, they make it look extremely easy. And guess what - for the most part, it really is extremely easy for them (once they have their system in place).  

So how do they do it? Are they super-humans that can play their pipes a million hours a day to continually mess about with their drone reeds until they get it perfect?  

No! Of course not!  

No, instead, pipers have developed systems of setting up their bagpipes to accommodate cane reeds that allow for longevity of playing time and amazing, transcendentally rich sound. There are many different approaches that can all yield results, but today I’d like to invite you to learn about my system that I’ve developed for myself.
