If any of the below statements are true, you owe it to yourself to hear me out:  

One: I am so baffled and confused when it comes to bagpipe sight-reading that I don't even really try. I just sort of "fake it till I make it" with all of my tunes.

Sight Reading is a skill, like any other, made up of a few simple components.  

Sight-reading is a skill, just like any other. Just like any other skill, the way we need to approach learning it is to break it down, into small, managable chunks.

If we get good at the chunks, we get good at sight reading, right? 

The problem is - bagpipe music looks hopelessly complicated at first glance. 

If you've never looked at music before, it just looks like total gibberish, right? We've got weird squigglies at the beginning of every line. We've got two strange numbers at the beginning. We've got big notes, little upside-down notes, grouped upside-down notes, dots here, dots there - 

How the heck are we supposed to be able to make any sense of this, like... ever?

As you start to become familiar with the terminology of all of this, the feeling doesn't necessarily get much better. Even though I know what this stuff is called... and maybe I know what notes are supposed to go where, etc... it still doesn't let me play this music in recognizable form, at any sort of speed. 

Just knowing about reading music doesn't mean we can do it. Not even close. 

"Theory" doesn't matter as much as real-world techniques to extract our notes from the page in musical form, on demand. 

Just Memorizing the Theory Won't Work.

There's too much going on when we sit down in front of a new tune to try to recall memorized theory super-quickly in real-time. 

Re-read that sentence above. THIS is why you've failed thus far at becoming a good sight reader. Most people assume that this is like a school spelling test where we just need to regurgitate some stuff we've studied in order to get a good grade. Nope. Sight reading is a real-world exercise where we need to actually be able to accomplish a goal in order to be successful.

Yes, this is different - it's more like hitting a baseball against a new pitcher with a heck of a fast-ball. There's not really any time to think about it - we need to train ourselves on the basics so that we can make connections instantly.

When you're standing in front of that pitcher, you don't care whether the fastball is coming at 87 miles per hour or 88 miles per hour - you're just trying to hit that thing. 

When we sight read bagpipe music, we really don't care if that's a dotted 32nd note, or what the note we're going to is called - we just care about getting the right sounds to come out at a moment's glance!
